We are fascinated by the story of life in Fujian Hakka round houses so we took a trip from Xiamen to visit Yongding Hakka Round Houses. as we did not like the shopping-group tulou tour, we hired a private car from xiamen. It was three hours ride in a coach up the mountain. The road is narrow and winding and sometimes very dangerous. All the way we saw nothing exciting except some small fields and wooden houses with little makeup.
We finally reached the Yongding Chuxi Tulou Cluster and was surprised to see the different habitat. It was concrete fortress with round and square shapes buildings. It was well kept and look beautiful with rivers flowing at the side. Our tour guide recommend us to try their food cooked by villagers at a eating house. An old couple was preparing the food and they were so happy to see us. At first we thought there is not much food they served us, but surprising they give us a nine courses lunch. The food is delicious with their home grew chicken, fish and prawn which they bought from market at foot of mountain and many vegetables. The cook came out and meet us and even ask whether we have enough food to eat or not. We also saw some persimmon fruits where they grown and dried them for sale.
After lunch we walked over to the Yongding Hakka Round Houses by a small narrow bridge across a river where we saw some villagers washing clothes. We went into the tulou through the only door and saw the concrete structure with no windows, The guide told us the Hakka Round House is built such a way so that it can prevent from attack by other village tribes. The 6-storey Hakka Round House has full facilities on the ground floor such as common kitchen area, warehouse, grain processing area and a small house for offering prayers. The next few floors are residences. Although some have move out but we can see some older people living inside. Their life is simple with not much furniture. Most of the young residents has move to the cities to work there. The houses inside are wooden struture and we have to climb steep wood staircase from floor to floor. It has a great view to look down from top of the tulou and able to see everyone inside this round building in every floor.
It was a wonderful experience as we had never seen this type of residences before in other parts of the world. At around 16:00, we left Yongding Hakka Round houses and transferred back to Xiamen.
