About Gulangyu Island
Gulangyu Island, also well known as Kulangsu island in western coutries in last century, is one of the most popular tour destination in Xiamen. About 2 km square meter in area, Gulangyu Island is renowned for its beaches, winding lanes and its varied villa architecture. It is said that each family in Gulangyu island owns a piano,giving it the nickname of “Piano Island” or “ the island of Music”. Those who do not visit Gulangyu Island haven’t really been to Xiamen.

Best Time to visit
Located at the southern-east part of China, Xiamen and Gulangyu enjoy a tender climate. the average temperature of the whole year is around 20 centigrade. No cold winter and hot summer in Gulangyu which make it suitable for all year round travel. Some typhoons may visit Gulangyu in July and August which may stop the ferry between Xiamen and Gulangyu.

Location & Map
Gulangyu Island is located just 600m to the south-west of Xiamen downtown. it is about 20-minute ferry driving from Xiamen International Cruise Terminal. and 30 minutes form Songyu Port in Hailing district.

Transportation
Ferry is the only way to transfer between Gulangyu island and Xiamen city. Tourists can take Xiamen – Gulangyu ferry at Xiamen International Cruise Terminal. There are two kinds of ferry tickets ,only is RMB35 per ticket for common boat to Sanqiutian Wharf in Gulangyu island, the other is RMB50 per ticket for deluxe boat to Neicuo’ao Wharf in Gulangyu island.

The only vehicles permitted in Gulangyu island are small electric scooters and electric government service vehicles.

Main Sightseeings & Attractions

1. Sunlight Rock ( Camel Rock)
Sunlight Rock, also known as Dragon Head Hill, is the highest point of Gulangyu Islet. Perched atop Sunlight Rock is a gigantic stone with a diameter of over 40 meters. A towering creation of nature and the symbol of Xiamen, it commands a panoramic view of the narrow channel between Xiamen Island and Gulangyu Islet, and was where Zheng Chenggong(often known abroad as Koxinga) stationed his troops before he recovered Taiwan from Dutch occuption. Ruins of Zheng Chenggong’s marine Command Platform and Ancient Fort Gate are still visible today.

Located in this area, Sunlight Rock Temple is one of the four top Buddhist temples in Xiamen. The temple was first built in the Ming Dynasty and was famed far and wide, attracting accomplished monks throughout the dynasties.

2. Haoyue Park
Haoyue Park is China’s only sculpture park built in commemoration of the national hero Zheng Chenggong. The name of the park derives from the line “I had a sleepless night thinking of Your Majesty as the bright moon light streamed in through the curtain”, from the “Two Yanping Lords Poetry Collection” composed in remembrance of the hero and the yearning for the return of the motherland’s treasured island of Taiwan. The major attractions in the garden include Zheng Chenggong’s Stone Statue, Zheng Chenggong’s Bronze Sculptures, Stele Corridor, Fuding Ancient Well and the Emperor’s Palace. The garden’s leisure and holiday villas are close to the sea These villas are the preferred dwellings for holiday makers on Gulangyu.

3. Shuzhuang Garden
Shuzhuang Garden was built in 1913 by a wealthy Taiwanese named Lin Erjia, who modeled it after his father’s villa in Banqiao,Taipei of Taiwan, Mr. Lin gave it the name “Shuzhuang” after his stylized name of “Shuzang”. The gardenis divided into two parts, with “Canghai” facing the sea and “Bushan” against the hill, each having five scenic sights. The Garden contains the Gulangyu Piano Museum, which is “China’s only and the world’s first-class” treasure house of pianos, with nearly 100 precious historic pianos from throughout the world. The museum is an epitome of Gulangyu’s musical culture.

4.Piano Museum
Piano Museum, which is finished on Gulangyu in January, 2000, is located in “Tingtao Pavilion” of Shuzhuang Garden. It covers an area of 450 square meters, and it is divided into two floors. There are 40 more old pianos displayed in the museum (collected by patriotic overseas Chinese Mr. Hu Youyi), among which are rare and valuable gold-plating piano in the world, the oldest four-corner piano in the world and the oldest and biggest vertical piano, antique hand-power piano, pedal auto-performing piano, 8-pedal ancient piano, etc.
No matter whether they are tourists, musicians or artists, Gulangyu Piano Museum edifies them in art and music endlessly. The famous Australian pianist Jefferly Toson is the sworn friend of Mr. Hu Youyi, he said, “I’m proud of my friend, he gave the most special gift to China”. Furthermore, for the opening of mesuem, Jefferly Toson held a special recital in Gulangyu Music Hall. After visiting the museum, French pianist Michel Boorston said: “I hope one day we can hold an international piano art festival here”. Our country’s famous conductor Han Zhongjie, Zheng Xiaoying and American Chinese Yin Chengzong are all deeply charmed by the Piano Museum’s music.
